В 1954 году обновленная команда разгромила сборную Швеции со счетом 7:0, позже сыграла вничью с олимпийскими чемпионами венграми. В 1955 году СССР принимал гостей - сборную ФРГ. Тогда они были чемпионами мира, поэтому этот матч был очень ответственным, в нем советская сборная хотела проверить свои силы. И СССР выиграла 3:2. Результат показал, что силы сборной возросли, что значительно укрепило ее авторитет. И уже через год на олимпийских играх в Мельбурне сборная СССР победила югославов (1:0) и взяла «золото».

К этому году в сборную СССР входили игроки нескольких клубов: Спартака, Торпедо, ЦСКА, Локомотива, СКА (Ростов), Крыльев Советов (Куйбышев), Динамо (Москва, Тбилиси, Киев).
